To refresh my skills I took a course in the Fall of 2012 at the Art League. My instructor, Pricilla Traecy recommended Gamblin paints and Liquin by Winsor & Newton.
Here's what I discovered in my paint box from my college days . . .

Look closely. Do you see "120" hand written on some of the labels? That is the price minus a decimal point. I paid one dollar and 20 cents for those tubes and discovered they are still workable!

Come see the results THIS Saturday from 6:00-9:00pm I will be in the gallery, Building 9 at the Workhouse Arts Center with refreshments, Artist Talk at 7pm, music, etc. Or come visit on Sunday, Aug. 10 from 12noon-5pm when I will also be at the gallery.
Thanks for stopping by,
Birch trees are some of my favorite trees. I discovered this group at the edge of a wood that my husband and I went hiking through. As I often take my camera and snap photos along our hikes, it solidifies my memories of the experience. This hike took us to the lake shore near Hunter's Cove in Rangeley, Maine. But this particular drawing could be almost anywhere . . . at the "Edge of the Woods."

Nature
is spectacular. As a keen observer of
the natural world, I delight in returning to the same
locale again and again to see how it differs each time. One time when was back in my home town, I
stopped along Route 9 to view the Mousam River and its salt marsh. When I arrived it was clear the tide was at
its peak. (This location is less than a
mile from the beach.) Much of the salt
marsh was gone – blanketed under the sea water that had surged up
river. The rising tide arrives twice daily
so it is no surprise to locals, but for me this inundation is spectacular.

Thank you for being a faithful follower.
Part of the reason for so few posts in recent months is that I have a new FB business account - find me there at "Kathleen Best Gillmann - artist".

I am re-imaging how to be active here. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, please visit the East Gallery in the Clinical Center (Bldg 10) at NIH to view my latest work, "At Water's Edge" through May 2, 2014.
And as always, I show my art work each month at building 9 at the Workhouse Arts Center and at the Loft Gallery. For details, check my website: www.VeryBestFineArt.com.

Where is it? At the Workhouse Arts Center, building 9, studio 910.

Why is it there? So YOU have a chance to see it!

What is it called? We Took to the Lakes
How did it get that title?
It's an obscure reference to a book I have enjoyed reading by Louise Dickenson Rich about her experience living in the back woods in the western mountains of Maine in the 1940's. I consider it a classic of regional literature. The book is called We took to the Woods.
Enjoy,
What makes a good painting?
Have you taken a basic drawing or graphic design class? Although some claim excellence in art is entirely a personal matter, I think otherwise and the better instructors in basic courses will introduce their students to the elements of art and design. Beginning with these elements, I believe there are objective standards by which to judge art. Please check out my latest release on You-Tube for some thoughts on the subject.

This short was filmed and edited by Ron Planting who, besides being my videographer, also has exceptional acting skills. You may wish to look for the film in which he takes the lead role, Treasure in Heaven, by Glory Streams Productions.

If you would like more detail on the subject of what makes a good painting, follow this link to an interview made in August when I took the Bose Gallery Award at the Art League's annual 'Scapes exhibit. My interview is at the bottom of the article so please click my name (misspelled as usual: Kathleen Best Gillman) at the top or scroll down once you get to the Art League blog for August 21, 2103.
I find beauty in what most people would consider trash. So what are potato antlers?

"Potato Antlers," colored pencil, c2013 KB Gillmann

If a picture is worth a thousand words, I'm sure you know the answer now. You know those spindly growths that sprout out of spuds? Well, those are what I mean by potato antlers and that is how this colored pencil drawing got its title.

What inspired me to make this drawing was the crinkly pumpkin that takes center stage. However, when setting up a still life one needs more than one actor. So I found a use for some old potatoes that still had life in them. Drawing from life is an exciting adventure to me. This drawing was juried into the All Media Member show at the Art League last month. Enjoy!

Until next time, I remain,
There you get a look at one of the paintings in my solo show at the Workhouse Arts Center last month - Mousam River Salt Marsh - currently at the Loft Gallery in Occoquan. Here is Arkansas River Valley approaching Salida, CO which he mentions in the Profile but is not visible in the on-line article:
The exhibit theme and title is Intertidal : New Coastal Paintings and is of my newest work - all completed this spring - which presents the drama and beauty of estuaries, salt marshes, rivers, and beaches located mostly in southern Maine where I grew up and still have the opportunity to visit family. I took the advice received long ago to paint and draw what I am most familiar with . . . in recent years I continue to find inspiration in these familiar places.
artists of Gallery 902 at the Workhouse Art Center Saturday, April 27 was a
wonderful success! The weather was
perfect – sunny yet not humid - and 13 artists registered in the morning to
paint. A “Flash Exhibit” of art created
that morning was installed shortly after 1:30 that afternoon and was poured
over by at least 120 adults and children attending the festivities. That is a conservative figure for those who
viewed the exhibit based on the number of People’s Choice votes collected. First and third place People’s Choice Awards
went to Michele Frantz, second place Award to Teresa T. Brunson and there were three
honorable mentions.

Highlights for me during the day were twofold. First, when I was at my easel creating a
painting of the Workhouse barns, I took great pleasure in talking with children
and adults who stopped to look over my shoulder. One gentleman asked if I would hold my
palette lower and let his granddaughter see how my colors were arranged. The little girl was small enough she could not
see the surface of my palette held at elbow level, so I bent lower to give her
a look and explanation. While at my
easel, I had several opportunities to instruct and encourage artists and art
enthusiasts young and old!

Secondly, I took great pleasure in being able to demonstrate
and explain by example and words what exactly plein air painting is. Many people who saw the exhibit were amazed
to learn that every art work in the show had been completed that morning! That’s what it’s all about. Plein Air painting is completed on location
usually in just a few hours. We can
thank the 19th century Barbizon School for inventing it and the
French Impressionists for making it popular. Local groups like the Washington Plein Air
Painters keep the method alive.

Our Workhouse Artist Associate group exhibiting in Gallery
902 has been asked to sponsor other plein air painting events and we hope to do
this again. Check back here or at the
Workhouse Artist Associates Facebook page.

[Editor’s Note: As soon as the event described here
finished, I began painting for my up-coming Solo (aka Featured Artist) show
opening in July at the Workhouse Arts Center.
Thus, my delay in making this report.]

glass vase and near the round brown-colored orange, and finally a small gourd
on the right next to another brown orange.
pairings. I see these objects as representing people and how when a
person gets reacquainted with a friend after a time apart some relationships
are immediately close again, some are tentative (like the pair on the left),
some are comfortable and cozy like the pair on the right. I settled on the
title after I finished the painting.
